ASTHMA
Asthma is an inflammatory disorder affecting the airways (lungs) which causes shortness of breath and ‘wheezing’. Potentially life threatening, this condition causes many symptoms and whilst an osteopath cannot treat the condition itself, Asthma has many side effects that an osteopath can treat. Symptoms of Asthma include coughing, wheezing, struggling to breath tight feeling in the chest among others. These symptoms especially after an attack, can leave lasting problems in the musculoskeletal system. Intercostals, scalenes, the diaphragm, and other muscles around the ribcage can become acutely & chronically tight and over time weak, preventing adequate intake of optimal oxygen. This tightness can lead and contribute to a vast array of other condition affecting the joints around the chest, back and arms. It can lead to for example an increase in kyphosis of the back where you notice shoulders starting to round, this is due to the tightening of muscles causing imbalances in the postural muscles.
Osteopaths believe in the body’s own ability to heal and repair itself, restoring these imbalances is the osteopaths main objective in treatment. Restoring these dysfunctions can have very positive effects to the effects of Asthma.
WHAT PRACTITIONER AT THE AARK CLINIC SHOULD I SEE?
We recommend you see The Aark Osteopath Lloyd Tilney. An Osteopath will work to improve the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system to allow the joints, muscles and visceral organs to function in better balance. This improves overall oxygen uptake in all tissues, better breathing mechanics and as a result alleviating and/or preventing potential disorders.
