MERALGIA PARESTHETICA

Meralgia Paresthetica is a neurological (nerve) condition that affects the outer part of the thigh from the hip down to and over the knee. It can feel tingly, pins & needles, burning, tender to touch and sometimes painful to walk. Often caused by compression/ irritation of the Lateral Cutaneous nerve of the thigh. This particular nerve only supplies sensory (feeling) feedback to the brain and doesn’t have any motor control. The root cause is unknown and improves well with non-surgical treatment.

Common sites of compression are spinal stenosis in the lumbar spine, inguinal ligament, spasm muscles, weight gain, surgical procedures, although rare possible neuroma ( non cancerous tumour), diabetes.

It can occur in both men and women of all ages. In most cases the symptoms of Meralgia Paresthetica subside with treatment. There can be times when pins & needles can linger for a long time, however with appropriate treatment the irritation to the nerve can be relieved.

Osteopaths are very experienced treating Meralgia Paresthetica and are highly qualified practitioners dealing with musculoskeletal pain/conditions. Lloyd Tilney, the Aark Osteopath uses a range of techniques including joint manipulation, articulation, soft tissue massage, stretching, traction, acupuncture among others to help relieve the symptoms of Meralgia Paresthetica.
