COLIC / CRYING BABIES
Crying Babies / Colic is described as a baby who is generally irritable and who cries for long periods of time for no apparent reason. Usually confirmed by your GP, Colic can be a very upsetting time, not just for your baby, but for you as well. Symptoms usually include windiness, distended belly, sleeping problems, lots of crying, bringing up recent food. Your baby may seem to be in pain and may generally seem inconsolable. Up to 40% of babies suffer with Colic so you could argue it is relatively normal and will eventually resolve itself. However, during this time, family members may be suffering from lack of sleep, the baby can be very disturbed and uncomfortable and all of this can potentially ruin the amazing time of welcoming a new addition into the family.
WHAT PRACTITIONER AT THE AARK CLINIC SHOULD I SEE?
If all or some of the above sounds familiar, consulting an Osteopath can help ease some of the symptoms of Colic. An Osteopath uses very subtle techniques such as Cranial Osteopathy and fascial unwinding when treating babies. During labour, the babies head undergoes great pulls and pressures especially with the use of forceps or ventouse. This can irritate the Vagus nerve situated below the skull at the back of the head. This nerve controls and innervates the bowel, potentially making the stomach more sensitive, contributing to colicky symptoms. Working on the ribcage, abdomen and back using fascial unwinding to encourage the bodies tissues to unwind and let go, often aids the baby feeling more comfortable. Lloyd Tilney has achieved great results working with Babies.
