PREGNANCY
Pregnancy involves carrying an increasingly heavy load, with biochemical and physical changes taking place as the months go by. Your body, undergoes a huge adaptation process to accommodate these changes. Often this takes place while there are other children in the family, potentially placing great strain on your back. As the babies weight increases, the biomechanics of your body change to shift your centre of gravity, this places huge demand on the low back, pelvis and hips. Another challenge is the gradual release of the hormone relaxin. It is responsible for softening the ligaments in the body to allow and prepare for the birthing process. This body wide softening, makes it vulnerable to strains and sprains in the back.
WHAT PRACTITIONER AT THE AARK CLINIC SHOULD I SEE?
Osteopathy is a safe method of treatment throughout all stages of pregnancy. Focus of treatment will be on maintaining optimal balance in the spine, improving flexibility and mobility of joints and muscles and preparing the low back and pelvis for labour. Osteopathy is also beneficial for associated neck and shoulder pain during and after pregnancy. Breast feeding is well known for causing postural strains across the body.
