‘SLIPPED DISC’

A ‘slipped Disc’, also known as a prolapsed or herniated disc is where one of the discs in between the vertebral segments in your spine has ruptured and the ‘gel’ like material has leaked out. The term ‘slipped disc’ is a slight misnomer. The discs do not slip, the more appropriate term is ‘prolapsed disc’. Although it can occur anywhere in the spine, most common ‘prolapses’ occur in the low back region.

The 24 spinal segments and discs are designed to withstand tremendous loading and torsional forces, however sometimes they are pushed beyond their capacity. This can result in damage and subsequent symptoms. The spinal cord travels through the vertebral column relaying sensory and motor signals from your body to your brain. When a disc ruptures and the ‘gel’ like material exits it can press against the spinal cord or a spinal nerve.
Symptoms you may experience: pain in the area of prolapsed disc, pain in the area of the body controlled by the nerve, for example, a prolapsed disc in the low back may impinge on the sciatic nerve causing symptoms along the back of the thigh, knee, calf and foot. Sensations of shooting pain, numbness, burning, pins & needles  and weakness in the area the nerve controls are very common with prolapsed discs.
