TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) DYSFUNCTION

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction is a condition affecting the joint between the jaw bone and the skull. This joint is easily palpated just below the ears. Symptoms include pain around the joint and referring into the jaw and upper neck region. Often accompanied by clicking and an inability to fully open the mouth. This condition has been known to be caused by prolonged opening of the mouth i.e. at the dentists or even yawning. Grinding your teeth (Bruxism) at night may contribute to the development of TMJ dysfunction. Chronic dysfunction of these joints leads to degeneration and arthritis. This can further complicate issues with tightening of the surrounding muscles and joints in the neck becoming involved.

ASSOCIATED CONDITIONS

As previously mentioned Bruxism (teeth grinding) can cause TMJ Dysfunction. Osteopathic treatment would be recommended to treat the dysfunction, however, Bruxism can have underlining causes such as Anxiety. Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), or a combination of the two, can offer great relief in the treatment of Anxiety.
