Nobody is getting enough, if you take magnesium too much too soon you get the laxative effect. This is why brands such as Andrews (magnesium oxide) increases bowel movements. This is great as a tool, however slow intake of the RIGHT type of magnesium will replenish optimum levels of magnesium and help restore very important mechanisms in the body.

In evolutionary terms we spent thousands of years close to coastal regions eating lots of food from the sea, all rich in magnesium. 3 times more than calcium! Nowadays we have settled inland and more importantly eating food from farmed land devoid in magnesium. People are being told to take calcium supplements, we eat lots of dairy foods rich in calcium.  This has direct effect on our muscle contractions because calcium is now over abundant in our tissues. If you don’t have enough magnesium, your muscles go into spasm. Looking at magnesium and calcium; one contracts the muscles and the other relaxes them. With a healthy balance of the two, then muscles will contract and relax and perform their function. With too much calcium muscles go into intense spasm including the muscles of the heart causing heart attacks. Magnesium is so important for your heart. The largest amount of magnesium is found in your heart. Specifically the left ventricle, if your depleted in magnesium then calcium can cause the left ventricle to spasm and lead to heart attacks.

RDA for calcium is 500-700mg. We are getting enough calcium in most well varied diets. Magnesium on the other hand most people are only getting roughly 200mg, far less than calcium leading to a very prorate between the two with catastrophic consequences to our health.

Magnesium oxide is ok, but magnesium citrate is better and available in health food stores. Magnesium salts for the bath (Epsom salts) are very good with a high absorption rate. More harder to find sources are Pico ionic magnesium which is 100% absorbed in the cells with no laxative effect. Magnesium oil spray is another topical supplement with great results.

Obviously try to get magnesium from vegetables like green leafy veg, Sunflower & Pumpkin seeds, avocados, sesame seeds, bananas, but if you suspect you are depleted, then these supplements are of great benefit.
